
Residential building work has been notoriously unregulated in the United Kingdom. It is not unusual that people allow builders to commence quite serious building work to their homes such as extensions, loft conversions and basement excavations with no proper written contract signed by both parties. They do so at their peril, entrusting their home to the goodwill of near strangers whose interests may be partially or wholly profit and moving onto the next job. It is perhaps small wonder that disputes with builders are so common.
